Can machines think?

Find out by playing this game of "pure logic" against your own PC. You and the PC play detective and engage in a war-of-minds to break each other's secret-code using the clues of Bulls and Cows. See the tutorial in the game for more information. PC-Sherlock is a fun way to improve your logic! Another name for this classic game is MasterMind. But, there is a big difference with other MasterMind games that you may have seen. Here, your PC becomes a formidable opponent and unless you are a mastermind expert, it will consistently beat you in breaking your secret code. The game supports 3, 4 and 5 digit mastermind.


This is a small download of about 90K with the name 'sherlock.exe.' After downloading, simply run it. There is no install needed.

Running on Windows XP: This is a DOS game. It runs fine on Windows XP in a DOS screen. It takes up a full-screen but you can always interrupt the game at any stage by Alt-Enter keys and go back to your work. You can then resume the game from where you left off by clicking on that DOS window.

How to run on Windows Vista or Windows 7? You can run any DOS program or game including this one on Windows 7 or Vista if you download and install a program called DosBox from dosbox.com. I am giving brief instructions here. For details, please refer to the DosBox documentation.

• Download and install DosBox for Windows from dosbox.com.
• Make up a folder on any drive (other than your main C drive) to keep your dos programs. For example, D:\dosprogs.
• Download this game's file, sherlock.exe, into the above folder D:\dosprogs.
• Now start DosBox and type the following on its command prompt: mount c d:\dosprogs
• Then type c in DosBox.
• Then type Sherlock to run this game.
• Similarly, you can copy other dos programs into above folder and run them from within DosBox.

Running on other operating systems like Mac OSX: Since DosBox can run on other systems, PC-Sherlock can probably run in DosBox on a Mac OSX or Linux too. But I don't have Mac so I haven't tried it. You can try and let me know how it works.
